Mobile Workstation for Royal Mail
Brief
Royal Mail were developing a new operation to allow improved tracking of mail items.
The operation required a new process for staff to complete. This had to be undertaken within their existing operation.
Royal Mail commissioned RED Design Ergonomics to develop a mobile workstation for this operation. Our input also included the User Interface (UI) of the touchscreen device used at the workstation.
Process
We adopted a user-centred approach working with the project team. This included the following stages:
-
Requirements of the workstation - including a visit to a site where the operation would be trialled
-
Design development - create a mobile workstation and work with manufacturers to develop the design
-
Prototype testing - simulated mail processing activities with a range of Royal Mail staff
-
UI design - following a review we were asked to input to the UI of the touchscreen device
Fit of 5th percentile female and 95th percentile male at the workstation concept design.
CAD images showing the workstation design.
Proposed User Interface for address entry screen.
Fit of 5th percentile female and 95th percentile male at the workstation concept design.
Outcome
A number of the prototype workstations were manufactured for a trial of the new operation. These, along with the UI design resulting from our input, facilitated a successful trial.
