Bundle Holder for Royal Mail
Brief
Royal Mail delivery staff use different equipment depending of their delivery and preference. During a trial of new delivery methods RED Design Ergonomics were commissioned to work with delivery staff to develop equipment that enhanced their delivery, making the work easier and more efficient.
A new bundle holder for use on delivery trolleys was identified to have potential benefits.
Process
We adopted an iterative user-centred approach working directly with the delivery staff to develop the bundle holder. This included the following stages:
-
Requirements of the bundle holder - what are the operational and physical requirements
-
Design development - create a design following the requirements identified
-
Mock-up testing - on deliveries and collecting feedback from delivery staff
-
Prototype testing - develop design following the mock-up testing. 3D printed prototype tested by delivery staff

Outcome
The prototype bundle holder design met the requirements of delivery staff. However, Royal Mail decided that the bundle holder did not offer sufficient benefit to be rolled out across their fleet of delivery trolleys.
